This night, this room, this posture -- it but seems
An archetype, a postage stamp: the day
Ends here, bordered by the perforated
Edges of the past light and the future
Darkness; so each stamp is pulled from the page
And posts all my articulated deeds,
Forgotten or recalled, to One who cares;
And with two or three stamps left on the page
Of the year, I have come to this line that
Bespeaks all events in its motion, and
Discover where I have been all the time --
Or should have been -- here! -- in the possession
Of myself where I am; not drawn away,
Aborting my presence, on things to prey!
