Theme: Admiration

A Mother

Many visit my mother at night
She bears it all for me, she says
Sold her body but not her soul
She sends me to school with pride
She also feeds an urchin or two
Her dream is to see me as a bride
And my family would be hers

“To your child, would I be a grandmother or a grandfather”?
She says, with a giggle
As I grow up now, I understand
She is neither a man nor a woman
She’s creation’s trick
But beneath her garish make-up
Shines a wonderful heart
One day she told me
That she had adopted me
Couldn’t give birth but gave me a life
I know she is a’ two-in one’
A mother and a goddess!

Comment Congrats! Madhavi, a very delicate composition. Very emotional one, too!

Comment The poem captures brilliantly the contradictions of human life without indulging in sentimentality.
