Seeking My Beloved

If I cannot find You there dwelling within my heart,
where can I hope to search for You my Beloved?

Can I find You in a thousand books penned by men of wisdom?
Are you there within the ashaar written for You my Beloved?

If I chant ten thousand times the mantras of the sages
will I become one thousandth part more for You my Beloved?

I could emulate the sacrifice of the White Lotus Sutra
and offer immolation for You my Beloved.

What good would any of these acts be
if my heart is not open for You my Beloved?

Here, within these unworthy ribs, this earnest heart,
I will measure out my life for You my Beloved.
