Criticism

For many men and women
Even some children too
One of the favorite pastimes
Continues to remain
Criticism of others.

Often I wonder
What are the reasons...
Lack of self confidence
An inferiority complex
A false sense of pride
Jealousy or inflated ego
Or just a time pass?

But one thing is for sure
In no way it achieves
Any moral or material gains
When you look at
Objects, persona or prospects
Other than a lot of
Time and energy loss.

A far better course could be
To be honest with the self
A careful and conscious
Introspection and questioning
Of one's own actions
Past and present
Through self-criticism
Makes life easier.

A willing acknowledgement
and acceptance
Of one's own shortcomings
and faults
Paves way for correction
And self improvement
Besides preventing us
To repeat same mistake again.

Moreover, confessing our faults
To our own self and God
Then trying best to correct it
Is far more gracious and humane.

Mr Ashby, I absolutely agree. I have not specifically touched upon this aspect but as I understand, you are referring to what we often call a constructive criticism. Such a criticism is usually made by a very mature person with an objective of improving some area of another person's life or work (i.e. an artistic or written work) or even his behaviour / conduct, and should always be welcomed. You will notice that those who practice self-criticism are usually more receptive to this form of criticism too.

Enjoyed the poem. If you can see the beneficial effects of self-criticism, then you will admit criticism can be a good thing. We cannot always be independently aware of our faults; sometimes, it is brought to our attention by others. Acceptance of criticism is a sign of humility, and we should be grateful. The fault criticised becomes part of our self-knowledge.
