Bay Watching

A cormorant dives through a bait-ball of tiny fish

Water and sky discuss each other’s take on grey

Clouds, motionless, watch all below with quiet detachment

Boats, waiting for something to do, nod in collective agreement
                at their predicament

The breeze lifts and a sail is struck, the crack of canvas
                applauds its release from captivity;
                those left behind look on longingly

The dogs understand that there is nothing to do but watch

This bay, this scene, this day without you
                is just a day for watching,
                watching and remembering you.
