Brightly Coloured Snails

Like so many shattered brightly coloured snails,
My hopes and dreams are scattered on the trail.

I awoke alone this morning with a start
I thought I heard you breathing and the beating of your lovely heart.

It was the dogs my love! Just the dogs for company.
More shattered snails left lying on the trail for me.

The kookaburra's raucous cry still rouses me each morn
But tears and dreadful emptiness now accompany the dawn.

I thought by now the winds of time would blow away those pretty shells
But still they decorate my trail, no regrets, I wish them well.
