All in a Day’s Work

In many a public sector bank,
Branch Manager’s job not easy,
Despite the position and rank,
The work can drive one crazy.

Oh, my days as a manager in Delhi -
India’s money and political underbelly,
With its power, influence and pressure,
The tension for me - beyond measure.

A bank’s profits, dependent on its credit portfolio
Can keep one on the go or land in *NPA imbroglio.
A manager’s decision-making skills and acumen,
Are on test as also his knowledge of the domain.

With every fellow making tall claims
Of connections, playing power games,
Loans often landed in Bermuda Triangle,
Lost hopes of repayment from any angle.

Of loans headed towards the Bermuda Triangle,
Caught in a confusing maze of repayment tangle,
They are offered recovery sops and packages,
With the manager happy to pack his baggages.

Some bad cases follow the manager everywhere,
Till a convenient scapegoat is found to repair
The loan portfolio with gusto and desperation
As this work could impact his/her promotion!

Banking – all about handling public money –
Despite pressures, offers moments funny,
With clients displaying financial ignorance,
Though shining with professional brilliance.

If one overlooks banking’s business sides,
Its human side comes with interesting asides,
As educational, consumer and housing loans
Fulfil many middle-class goals and aspirations.

Working in a bank offers one great exposure
And teaches one many lessons in composure.
One learns to respect client’s confidentiality,
With commitment, equality and no duality...

Even if in the internal politics caught,
Bankers by nature are a friendly lot...
They come across many in their tenure,
Whom having little choice, they endure.

A buzzing banking hall
Open to customers all
Offers financial bloodline
With a “Welcome” sign!
