Sea at Isla Vista

  The sea lavenders blooming
Above the eroded beach
Compete with shades
Of the ocean blue.

Stretching into the horizon
The curving northeast winds
Touch your face and
Startle you into history.

The surf from reef breakers
Take you into
The undisturbed calm
Of a bygone era.

This was Chumash territory
Whose people once imagined
A transitory control over
A paradise now lost.
