They both
Planned to
Have a child.

A son they
Preferred
But a daughter
They had.

Frustrated,
They neglected
Their daughter,
And diverted
Their attention to
Their neighbours'
Sons.

But no matter
However much
They tended to
Others' sons,
Those sons
Still couldn't
Be their sons.

By birth and nature,
They forever
Remained
Others' sons.

So all the
Attention-giving
And attention-seeking
Went in vain.

Their void remained.
They retired frustrated,
With their one and only
Child - their hapless
Daughter, because of her
Gender, always neglected.
