We can’t be vermin “ferocious” and “odious”,
But are of all the creations the most prodigious,
We can’t to monkeys our lineage trace;
But connect to His grace.
We are a part of Him.
And He our homely kin;
Sent He us all to this earth,
To follow His path with mirth;
All our conditions take as His will;
And never in blues our precious life kill;
Let everyone of us to a father common trace,
And make every hearth and home a blessed place.
Tear to shreds the manacles of distrust that us divide,
That brotherhood to the mankind can love and peace provide.
Note: The rejection of Darwinian theory of evolution as well as Swiftian view of mankind that earned him the sobriquet "misanthrope" [("I cannot but conclude the bulk of your natives to be the most ferocious race of little odious vermin that nature ever suffered to crawl upon the surface of the Earth." (Jonathan Swift)] and the Hindu belief in God’s role in creation triggered this poem. |
