Words – my interface with the world around
And my heart where feelings abound,
Provide the access and passage to my heart’s domain;
Where the inward eye searches for the efficient most;
Words that could perform the tasks given;
Their mettle proven made me deploy;
Some with a known identity get an easy success,
While those with an image tainted meet with distress.
II
Some of those not with a discerning eye bestowed,
Are wont to find fault with them;
They complain my words are not that fragrant,
And complain about their misdemeanour,
When those with insight find them worth the manor.
III
Words that did others outshine,
In charges different given in others’ domains,
And their mettle did prove,
Their selection I with great gusto approve.
The unworthy ones I eschew,
And reward the brave,
That sing of the melodies grave,
The melodies of melancholy, the melodies of mirth,
And the melodies of feelings sublime.
IV
Select I the team of my words,
With great circumspection and care,
Guided by their skills proven,
The grey-haired cronies that me advise,
To change my players with faces new and their device,
I feel sorry for them,
For they have not the eye discerning,
Nor a heart that feels,
The vibrations that my word with finesse fills.
Note: More than 15 years back, after having gone through some of my poems, one of my senior colleagues observed in the words “I will guide you how to write poems” and suggested substitution of some of my words. This suggestion to substitute my well-chosen words in favour of others’ words triggered this poem. |
