Amma's Wisdom

Amma
was simple,
compassionate,
with a
heart of gold.

As young children,
we would surround her
to listen to her
folktales and songs,
interspersed with some
serious teachings about
life, love and God.

For her, Truth
was both
a journey
and the destination.

She would explain:

The search for Truth
does not begin with
accumulated knowledge,
but with
the awakening of the heart.

She would caution that
in a world driven by
intellect, ambition,
attraction, distraction,
and desire,
the heart must remain
one’s deeper compass.

By questioning
the impulses that govern us,
we begin to confront
the desires that enslave us
and find freedom
from their hold.

By quietly observing
the vagaries of the mind,
we may begin to glimpse
the deeper truth of existence
and, perhaps,
the Divine within.
