The last moments of Gadaffi see him
brutalised by his captors, the password
‘Allahu Akbar’, the root of re-invented Islam,
the spirit of the uprising, his death warrant.
In modern times, one has seen the execution
of tyrants, but it has always been clinical –
a bullet or a hangman’s rope: to the end
each has been shielded from mere mob justice.
But now the UN demands an investigation,
not many months away from the killing of Bin Laden
by US special forces; might not that justice
be the precedent that Allah’s name evokes?
