A Candlelight Dinner

  An intimate call,
At close to midnight -
He promised her all.
There'd be no more flights,
Or talks of leaving,
His work was on track
Now he would be back
With bag and baggage.

He had suggested,
A warm welcome home -
Candlelight dinner,
Followed by champagne
And heady romance.
She was delighted,
And could no longer
Sleep, after the call.

She began, planning
A special menu,
Choosing some wines,
To go with the food,
Dusting and polishing.
By evening, fatigue
Hit her and she fell
Into a deep sleep.

When he returned, he
was surprised to find
His lady asleep and
the dinner table
Set up with candles.
A minute later,
He shed his tie, and
Lay down beside her.

The champagne warmed up
The candles flickered
The main course did burn
The whiff of burning food
Was simply ignored,
As they lost themselves
To love and dreaming
Sweet romantic dreams.....
