I have never known you
Though not in concealment
Yet you seem to remain concealed
You touch my mind like a painting
And it pleases my soul.

There are occasions when you come
And sit by my side
Yet I feel lonely.
You spend some time with me, O you stranger,
But you win only my eyes.

You keep yourself covered under something
Perhaps you have some pain
You keep on looking into the void
Sighing.

Perhaps something your silence wants to tell me
I keep on searching for its meaning.
I feel a pain when you leave me –
Never, O never you I have I known.
Translation of the poem Achena from the collection Bichitrita by Rabindranath Tagore. The original poem is at http://www.rabindra-rachanabali.nltr.org/node/14264
