Humshakals: The Biggest Bomb!
by G. Venkatesh Bookmark and Share

Whenever any film maker takes the audience for granted, invariably the movie has bombed at the box office. Sajid Khan's last film - Himmatwala was a superflop. Reason was not hard to seek. Ajay Devgan doing a jumping act like Jeetendra, Paresh Rawal trying to do a Kadar Khan... the 2013 remake of the 1983 box office hit starring Jeetendra and Sridevi flopped because it was simply not in sync with the times.

Today you find it so hard to watch a movie like Aan Milo Sajna or Mawali because though these films were a rage when they released first, today they look so absurd. Jeetendra's dances look so ludicrous today.

Coming to Humshakals, if the intent was to make the audiences laugh, then the move has backfired. Ram Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan in a gown ! Of course it is a good strategy for the producer to claim losses while filing tax returns but what about distributors?

Do not be surprised if the TOI reports that Humshakals is another Rs 100 crore movie. TOI and its supplements have now become promotional materials for Bollywood movies and regional movies. That is the only way the paper can fill its pages.

Next time a movie of Jacky Bhagnani is scheduled to release don't be surprised to read a 3-page interview of Jacky Bhagnani with the article beginning with - Jacky is honest, sincere, committed and a technology freak... A similar strategy for Humshakals met with a disaster.

Imagine spending Rs.500 for a movie where the plot is wafer thin and full of hard-to-laugh slapstick comedy and ageing actors like Saif and Ram cavorting as girls and proving to be great eyesores.

Sajid Khan made a watchable - Hello Baby which had a pretty decent run at the box office. It is high time Sajid sat down to write a good script instead of joining several comedy tracks as one and declaring it as a movie. Ram Kapoor looks better on the idiot box than the silver screen.

Once upon a time Sajid made fun of Bollywood celebrities on television. Now these celebrities are having the last laugh.
