The Birth

He was hurriedly awakened
From a very peaceful siesta
To be told his first grandson
Had arrived into the world

The elderly man smiled
So benevolently - a relief
The family name would
Now continue for another
Generation - he sat up soon

His wife was unduly quiet
He just wondered why but
Did not raise the question
His daughter-in-law had
Now gone up in his esteem

She had provided them with
A grandson and future heir
To run the family's business
What more could he expect
Fate had been very generous

While he kept fantasising
An involuntary tear slipped
Down his wife's sunken cheek
She wanted a granddaughter
As she couldn’t have a daughter

She silently contemplated
If the child were a baby girl
Her husband would have
Fired them for disturbing
His Sunday weekly siesta.
